Our first community potluck at studio mugen
First of all, thank you to everyone that came to the first potluck of the Summer! We really enjoyed sharing good healthy food with you!
Last Wednesday we had a first vegan macrobiotic community potluck. It was a great success and we had so much fun with our friends! The food I must say was the biggest highlight, next to the wonderful people. Everyone made beautiful dishes including a stunning arame saute from Sanae, couscous salad from Jessica Porter’s book Hip Chick’s Guide to Macrobiotics, pinto bean soup that I made that was a huge hit, quinoa salad w/ dried cherries, cucumber salad, green beans w/ garlic, baked mochi, lentil loaf with shiitake ginger gravy (from Zara at Macro Muse, which was SO tasty), healthy cookies from Armaiti the Vegan Vet, I made margarita cookies (no alcohol of course) and many more that I can’t remember. I was stuffed silly.
I was so busy organizing and getting things ready for the potluck that I didn’t take photos of all this wonderful food. I snapped a few shots of the mostly devoured dishes, which you can see on our Facebook page.
.
The next highlight was the great group of people that joined us. It was made up of my friends, people that have taken cooking classes from both me and Eric/Sanae, fans of ours, and close friends of Eric/Sanae’s. Many people got to meet Eric and Sanae for the first time even though they had eaten at seed before. It was really great for them to see all the younger people in the community interested in eating healthy. This makes me very happy too!
By the end of the night one thing was on everyone’s mind: When is the next one!?! Mark your calendars, it’s set for July 13th, 6-9pm. We really hope you can join us next time at studio mugen!
Studio mugen
We want to introduce seed’s associate location “Studio mugen” (mugen means infinity in Japanese) in Santa Monica.
Studio mugen is a place for eco-green events and vegan macrobiotic cooking classes taught by Eric, Sanae, and Hideki. If you would like to see the schedule of classes being held please visit here for Eric & Sanae’s classes.
Studio mugen is a tranquil setting surrounded by bamboo with many places to sit and relax by the trickling fountain. We have many fruit trees like avocado, loquat, plum, and persimmons, and a roof top garden with herbs like lavender, mint, sage, bay leaves, chives, parsley, oregano, and basil. It’s a beautiful place and feels like you are away from the city while you are here.
Studio mugen is available for rental for events, lectures, cooking classes, and meetings. Send us an email with all the details for your event and we’ll see if we can accommodate your group.
Studio mugen is also a environmental eco-green lodging that is available for short stays for anyone visiting Los Angeles/Santa Monica who wants a clean, quiet, peaceful, eco place to lay their head. Rates are depending on dates and length of stay.
Studio mugen is located 2 miles from the Santa Monica Co-op natural food store, 3 miles from the popular shopping destinations like the 3rd Street Promenade and Main Street where there are Farmer’s Markets on the weekends, and 2 miles from the Santa Monica Pier and beach. We are 2-4 miles away from some of the best vegan and macrobiotic restaurants in town like Seed (of course). The bus stop is right outside that can take you wherever you need to go in the city. Laundry facilities available and access to kitchen if needed.
Check out the beautiful Studio mugen!
We are holding potlucks, movie nights, and other community events, so we hope you will join us! First macrobiotic vegan potluck will be Wednesday June 2nd, 6-9pm. RSVP to loveericcookbook@yahoo.com.

HAPPY NEW YEAR (Part Deux!)
Are your New Year’s resolutions already a thing of the past?
We Are Here To Help!
The vast majority of those that bravely gave voice to a New Year’s Resolution have already abandoned those promises by the third week of the New Year. As we now enter the second month of 2010, Chef Eric & the kids at SEED Restaurant are at the ready with a helping hand and a sympathetic ear – a second chance to set realistic goals for your life…and, this time, to succeed. If your goal was to lose weight, eat healthier, find love or find a new career, SEED offers a few helpful insights. And, best of all, there’s no lectures or preaching; No attempt at converting followers to vegetarianism; No lifestyle changes that doom you to failure and fatigue. This year, SEED offers a series of classes, daily thoughts and tips, cooking instruction, and special events to assist you in gently, and purposefully, achieving your goals.
Let the New Year begin – Again!
First, Chef Eric and his wife – holistic/macrobiotic counselor Sanae Suzuki – offer a series of complimentary classes, seminars, and cooking demonstrations. Scheduled approximately once every two weeks, these classes might cover “Cooking with leftovers,” to “Realizing your life’s goals and dreams,” to “simple substitutions for fast food.” Class schedules are listed on the SEED website and are always posted in the restaurant for upcoming weeks. Most classes are held at the restaurant’s communal table, although many cooking classes/book signings are scheduled for bookstores and markets throughout Los Angeles over the coming weeks.
Secondly, SEED offers tips for a better life via our blog and our FaceBook page. These brief, insightful messages appear daily, and might include a cooking tip, an affirmation, a product recommendation, or a joke – all designed to focus the reader, if only for a couple of minutes per day, on achieving small realistic goals. The daily messages will run continuously for sixty days, after which time SEED will host in-house events for all of our followers to discuss successes and failures, and how to move forward productively and positively.
Thirdly, each week Chef Eric and Sanae will give away SEED DINNER FOR TWO’s, personalized copies of the couple’s own cookbooks, complimentary cooking classes, and complimentary counseling sessions to our followers. Prizes will be awarded via our facebook page, the SEED blog, and via local food bloggers.
Lastly, Chef Eric and Sanae will draw one name each week, with all winners invited to attend the finale to Happy New Year (Part Deux!) – AN EVENING WITH THE CHEFS. Offered with our compliments to celebrate OUR FIRST BIRTHDAY, guests will dine, mingle through the kitchen, watch cooking demonstrations and enjoy entertainment and readings, and meet leading cookbook authors and lifestyle experts. And, of course, the topic of conversation will be “Making Small Changes That Matter – The New Year’s Resolutions That Lasted.”
Lectures & Book Signings
We are so excited that Sanae will have many interesting lectures and books signings over the next few months. We hope you can join us for some or all of these events. Sanae’s new cookbook love, sanae will be available at each event for purchase (or bring your already purchased copy) and a book signing will be held after the lecture.

Halloween Venice Cleanup Was a Success
You would not believe the amount trash and grossness we picked up around the cafe! Not very many people showed up so we weren’t able to cover much ground. We would love to see you on our monthly clean-up day, and then we could clean more areas around the community.

Seed Sponsors Coastal Cleanup Day – Sept. 19th

We are proud to announce that we will be a sponsor at the Heal The Bay Coastal Cleanup Day taking place in 70 cleanup sites throughout LA County
“Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD) began in 1985 as a way to combat the increasing marine debris along our shorelines. It is part of an international effort and is now the largest volunteer day on the planet.”
Last year’s CCD, over 12,500 volunteers came together to clean their waterways and build community pride and picked up 185,661 pounds of trash and recyclables. Can you believe that! They prevented all this trash from making its way into our ocean.
On September 19th, instead of our usual Seed Community Cleanup (SCC), we ask you to join us from 9am-noon for the Coastal Cleanup Day. Meet at seed at 8:45am and we can go to the location nearest us together. As usual, any volunteers on our Saturday SCC day gets 10% off their lunch at seed!
Visit Heal The Bay for more information.
Vegan Macrobiotic Community Night Meetup Group

If you didn’t already know, seed has a bi-monthly Community Meetup, where we talk about vegan and macrobiotic principles and have special guest speakers.
Come meet other friends who are interested in veganism, macrobiotics, and sustainable living. Do you have a desire to learn more of a holistic approach to daily life and want to be truly healthy from the inside out? Join us!
Let’s get together, whether you are new and experienced in veganism and macrobiotics. Come share stories and your experiences with others in the community, make new friends, and share delicious macrobiotic food. Discuss the art and way to live the “Great Life” and the growing interest in using alternative methods to maintain or regain health.
Sanae Suzuki (macrobiotic counselor), who has been studying macrobiotics since 1993, will be available to answer your questions and will give out recipes or handouts. She has a great amount of knowledge to share with you and can help you on your quest to better health. Each month we will feature a guest speaker on issues relating to sustainable living.
$5.00 donation for Sanae’s time and help with answering your personal questions.
If you would like to get updates on our meetups and found out what discussions we plan to have you can join our Meetup.com group.
Hope to see you there!
